Hi,
I'm Mhairi, I create contemporary ceramics inspired by places, memories, colour and shape for everyday use.
I also specialise in paper folding, creating one-off paper sculptures and bespoke folded plastic light shades.
Designer Statement
Mhairi McBeath creates contemporary and joyful ceramic homewares by blending traditional techniques with modern technology. Mhairi begins her design process by digital drawing to sketch out patterns and ideas before throwing the majority of her work on a pottery wheel in her studio in Aberdeen. To ensure each of her pieces are distinctive, Mhairi uses her 3D printer to create unique and specific tools as each project/piece requires. Mhairi then decorates her work using a variety of underglazes and brush on glazes, using a wide spectrum of colours, with each having a specific meaning or purpose.
The other part of Mhairi’s practise is creating bespoke light shades, hand folded from thin colourful sheets of plastic and inspired by her love of Paper Folding and Origami, following on from her graduate collection of folded ceramics and light shades. Finally, Mhairi also dabbles in Paper Folding and Origami after using it as a design and low fidelity modelling technique throughout her education. Her Paper Folding and Origami is now mainly sculptural and decorative.
